Owner, Jo Kovach is an escapee from academic
and corporate life. She returned 'home' in 1994 and began
planning Blue Heron. Her own experience of canoing and camping
led her to believe that there were other folks out there who would
appreciate a day of wilderness canoing followed by fine food, hot
shower and a wonderful bed. Starting with two guest rooms (and
Jo lived in the third room) the Heron grew and expanded as more people
found it to be the quiet, hospitable haven they sought. In 1997
the dining room was opened to the public. In 2000 she build her
own home along side.
A fire in January of 2001 destroyed everything inside the building -
the logs them selves did not burn. With the support of the
construction community the building was rewired/plumbed, floored,
ceilings and walls as well as a major expansion with an up stairs and
back in business in July! Ask her the story of this incredible
cooperative building project.
An Ely native, Jo knows the wilderness flora and fauna and has stocked
each guest room with books about the North Country. After 13
years of watching birds outside the breakfast windows there are few Jo
does not know. Jo's mother came to live with her in 2005. As of
this writing (May '08) Anna, is 2 months short of 101!!! Two
wonderful mother-care staff allow Jo to run the Heron during the day.
Please observe check-in times as Jo switches hats to take over at 5 PM.
Craig Hamilton was a previous guest who wanted to own a B & B one
day soon. He signed on as manager-in-training for the summer of
2008. Craig was recently certified as a Spiritual Counselor.
Craig's specialty in the kitchen is an awesome Breakfast Pizza.
Some weekends he will be joined by his wife Janet. Rounding
out the staff is Jo's husband, Bill, (right; this is a recent
development) who fills in all the holes as needed. And nobody
makes better scrambled eggs than Bill.
Holding up our reputation in the kitchen is Ted L'Allier. Ted
joined the BH staff in Dec. 2007 and has now reopened the dinning room
to the public. Check out the menu! Ted previously
was Executive Chef for Medtronic. He is an awesome skier and
hiker - as well as chef.
